GENERAL STYLE

Title Page

All submissions to JSOA must include a title page containing the title, the authors’ full names, with their highest academic degrees and position held, the department and institution where the work was done, and the name, address, phone and fax numbers, and email of the author to whom correspondence should be addressed.

Manuscript Body

Manuscripts should be organized in the following order:

Title - The manuscript title does not need to be on its own page or included in header.
Abstract - An abstract of one paragraph (approximately 150 words) concisely stating the objective, methods, results, and conclusions should be included on a separate page for all articles except Brief Reports and Clinical Briefs. The abstract should not duplicate the text and should not contain references. A brief summary should follow Case Reports, Brief Reports, and Clinical Briefs.
Keywords - Several key words should be included. Keywords should describe the information contained in the paper, including any terms unique to the paper’s subject. All keywords should have the first letter of each word capitalized and listed using semicolons.
Introduction - State the problem that led to the study and the specific purpose of the study. It can include a brief review of the literature that is dealt with in the Discussion section.
Materials and Methods - Provide demographic data on the study population and define the period during which the study was conducted, the specific criteria for inclusion and exclusion of patients, the indications for the operative procedure, and the duration of follow-up. The section must also describe the statistical methods used in the study:

o The statement that “no significant difference was found between two groups” cannot be made unless a power study was done and the value of alpha or beta is reported. A large number of patients (at least 60, and often more, in each group or subgroup) is required to make such a statement. If no such power study was done, the author must state: “With the numbers available, no significant difference could be detected.”
o Ninety-five percent confidence in intervals is required whenever the results of survivorship analysis are given in the text or in graphs.
o Use of the word “correlation” requires reporting of the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient r.

Results - Provide a detailed report on the data obtained during the study. It is essential that all data in the text be consistent with data both in the Abstract and in any illustrations, legends, or tables included.
Discussion - Include a review of the literature, with emphasis on previous findings that agree with those of the present study. The Discussion should also state both the strengths and the weaknesses of the study.
References - Number references consecutively as they appear in the text. Personal communications and unpublished data may not be included in the reference list, but may be included in parentheses within the body of the text. The reference list should be typed double-spaced and separate from the text. Abbreviate journal titles according to the Index Medicus. List all authors up to three, followed by et al.

Journal example:

Ngarmukos CH, Parkdian V, Patradul A, et al. Fixation of fractures of the midshaft of the clavicle with Kirschner wires: results in 108 patients. J Bone Joint Surg. 1998;80-B:106-108.

Chapter in edited book:

Johnson DL, Harner CD, Madry MG, et al. Revision anterior cruciate ligament surgery. In FH Fu, CD Harner, KG Vince, eds. Knee Surgery 2nd ed Vol 1. Williams & Wilkins: Baltimore, Maryland;1970:877–895.

Legends- Legends should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet. Include sufficient information to interpret the illustration without reference to the text. State magnifications and stains in the legends for photomicrographs.
Figures- Only electronic black and white photographs, radiographs, drawings, graphs, and charts may be used free of charge; color illustrations cannot be used unless the author or institution pays the expense of including the color in the print issue (contact the publisher for cost). Resolution on artwork files provided must be at least 300 dpi or higher to ensure best-quality reproduction in the printed article. Please label each illustration (i.e. Fig. 1, Fig. 2A, etc.) in the order they are to appear in print before uploading them to the MTS. When uploading, please upload each figure individually.
Tables should be titled, numbered consecutively as they are cited and uploaded individually as Word documents. They should not duplicate information in the text and abbreviations and symbols should be explained in footnotes.
CME Questions - Include three multiple-choice questions with answers A–D, that can be answered by reading your article. Do not make any of the answers “all of the above,” “none of the above,” or multiple references (as in “A and C”). Please make sure to upload as a separate Word Document. It does not need to be included in the merged PDF.
